Mikuchan is so very dear to me... she is my good friend.
I found Hatsune Miku through a TV show called Daily Planet that aired on Discovery Channel Canada. I was sitting in my grandparents' living room at age 9, watching it with my grandpa as I often did. They were doing an "Asian Tech Week"... and then there she was. A blue haired anime girl on a real life stage. I thought it was so crazy and cool that we could do that, take an animated character and make them look as if they were really there, on a stage, singing.
I looked her up immediately on Youtube. Guess what the first song I, a little piss baby with an undiagnosed anxiety disorder, found was. Bacterial Contamination, the 3dpv specifically, immediately followed by Dark Woods Circus. Scared the absolute fuck outta me, but it didn't matter. A solid mass of my neurons had already changed their connections to form into the sillhouette of Miku V2, and thus she was there forever. The next song I remember finding after looking her up later was vgperson's translation of When Crooks Laugh by Nashimoto-P? I don't know how I found such a comparably deep cut... I couldn't find it for years after that! There's still some songs I can't find that I have vague memories of seeing as a child.
Well, regardless, Miku has always brought me joy indescribable. And while people getting things wrong about her online makes me upset, I'm overwhelmingly happy that more people know her than when I was young. Miku helps connect so many people, and I think that's really beautiful. You don't have to be an amazing musician, or the greatest artist, or own a Miku voicebank. By loving Miku or just liking Miku or even just liking a song that uses Miku, you're connected to so many people. You're connected to Miku herself, in a way. Anyone who's ever created anything with or about her has helped shape Miku in some way, as well. She's, inherently, a communal character. She's all of us.
I think a better way I can describe my feelings is by sharing this fact about me: I cannot watch or describe the 2011 Google Chrome commercial featuring Miku without bursting into tears. The end is what gets me. Miku, the virtual singer, and everyone, the creator. I am tearing up while typing this and that isn't a joke. I love Mikuchan so much......
Here are some of my favourite sanctioned-by-Crypton Miku designs :3
